The best time of day to catch fish from the shore is early morning from dawn until about 2 hours after sunrise and late afternoon from 2 hours before sunset until dusk. Fishing can be even better in the hours before a major cold front or rain event arrives.
A hearty fish that cooks up silky and sweet, the striped bass is pure Atlantic royalty. A storied culinary fixture in the history (and hearts) of Montauk, stripers are line-caught off the coast of Long Island, a 21st-century paragon of sustainability. Striped bass fillets with firm, white flakes hold up well with a variety of preparations, a favorite being poached with a topping of fresh tomatoes, basil, and garlic.

There’s a special place in our hearts for those who love bluefish. This is not “a beginner’s fish.” This is for palettes that have been out to sea, tasted life, and had a few adventures. Its rich color matches its rich flavor. Brushed with olive oil, grilled on an open flame, with a little salt. The soft, blue-hued meat quickly transforms into a silvery white.
Bluefish (Pomatomus saltatrix) are a migratory, oceanic species found throughout the world in most temperate, coastal regions, except the eastern Pacific. Bluefish migrate seasonally, moving north in spring and summer as water temperatures rise and moving south in autumn and winter to waters in the South Atlantic Bight. During the summer, concentrations of bluefish are found in waters from Maine to Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. In winter they tend to be found offshore between Cape Hatteras and Florida. Bluefish generally school by size, with schools that can cover tens of square miles of ocean, equivalent to around 10,000 football fields.
Bluefish are fast growers and opportunistic predators, feeding voraciously on almost any prey they can capture. Bluefish live up to 12 years and may exceed lengths of 39″ and weights of 31 pounds. Bluefish reach sexual maturity at age two and spawn offshore from Massachusetts through Florida.
New York State open fishing season – all year. The best times of day to head out for the best catch opportunities are generally early morning and dusk, during low light conditions, or on overcast days. But bluefish can often be caught and landed at any time, opening up nearly unlimited possibilities for scheduling your time on the water.

James Hussey with the 31-pound, 12-ounce world-record bluefish caught off Hatteras, North Carolina
The world record bluefish was caught on Jan. 1, 1972, by James Hussey. Hussey was fishing at Hatteras Inlet in North Carolina, trolling plastic eels when a gigantic bluefish slammed his line. He fought the to-be world record for 15 minutes before hoisting it into the boat. Back at shore, the monster bluefish tipped the scales at 31 pounds and 2 ounces.
